ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER Alan August was given his first camera in 1960, for his 10th birthday. Five years later Alan went on a coast-to-coast bus tour of the USA. A simple Kodak Instamatic and many cartridges of Kodachrome not only recorded the journey, but began his journey as a photographer. In the late 70s photography became a passion, and in the 80s a profession. With the turn of the century, having had his fill of brides and grads, Alan decided to use photography to express his own inner feelings, instead of trying to portray other people's inner feelings. During his studio days, as a member of the Professional Photographers of America and the Professional Photographers Association of New England he attended several workshops on photo retouching (using traditional methods) which he gives credit for his acceptance of Photoshop as a legitimate photographic tool (in 1992!) and his quick climb up Photoshop's normally steep learning curve. August is a graduate of Bryant University in Smithfield Rhode Island. He is past president and was the first Digital Photography Chair of the Photographic Society of Rhode Island. He is an active member of the Photographic Society of America, the Wickford Art Association Photo Guild, and the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative. Alan's photographs have been exhibited throughout the US and in Hong Kong, Italy, Scotland, and Belgium. |
